Review of Black Creek by a Master Gardener…

Thank you, Sharon, for your thoughtful read and review of my romantic suspense novel, Black Creek, due out September 24th! I’m sure the main character, Brie Chapman, would be pleased with your stamp of approval on her landscaping and gardening work.

“Black Creek is a book that can be enjoyed anywhere – on the beach, in a lounge chair, or relaxing in bed.  The lives of two families and friends are intertwined despite their hardships and losses.  Suspicions, love interests, and conflicts occur at intervals that keep the reader’s interest.  The main character’s careers as teacher and landscaper draw her into the life of a neighbor, which kindles yet another emotional phase for her.  Readers are left in suspense to the very end as to who the villain is and the “whys” being answered.  Ms. Wolfe’s description of landscape designs gives her audience a visual for their mind’s eye.  The choices of plants indicate that research was done not only on the environmental and horticultural needs necessary for that region, but also for aesthetic purposes.”

What Motivates a Writer to Write?

After a whirlwind of a week (or two!), I decided to sign with Crimson Romance. I am truly looking forward to working with them. Black Creek will be available through several ebook devices and through print-on-demand. The latter is a term for purchasing a print copy through an order, then having it mailed to you–as done through Amazon–or you ordering, then picking it up–as in at a Barnes and Noble. I’ll post more details here and on Facebook and Twitter as I learn them.

I can’t thank my amazing and wonderful readers enough for their hounding, support, pushing, support, humbling me and support! You’re truly wonderful and are a huge part of this.

Much to some of my fellow-authors’ demise, this biggest piece of what I’m taking away from this process is a clearer picture of why I write. When I was offered the first contract I was thrilled! But they wanted me to cut 12 to 17 K from my 92 K novel. Then, the snowball began its decent down the hill, picking up size and momentum as it went. Other companies moved my work to the top of previewing queue. Another offer emerged. I was thrilled again! But they wanted me sign for three years and agree to right of first refusal for subsequent novels in the series.

I realized I really just want to write novels.

I didn’t want to cut 12 K and didn’t want to commit to such a binding contract. I wasn’t in the author world when self-publishing was a four-letter word and was perfectly willing to dive into this on my own. All my ducks were in a row and I built up my confidence enough to request the one company ‘cut their cut’ to 6 K and the other company to drop the right of first refusal clause. To my surprise, both graciously offered to bend.

So, here I am a Crimson Romance author. I am revved and ready to fly. And I have you, my readers, to thank for it. Thank you!

Submission Requests…

I received requests from all 5 of the editors I pitched to at the Spring Fling Writer’s Conference; 1 within agency referral, 3 partials and 1 full manuscript request. As long as I was in the submitting mode, I sent to 3 other houses that looked like they may be a fit for Black Creek, 1 of which has already responded with a request to view the full. I can’t thank my readers enough for your requests for print copies and for the requests for ebook availability. You overwhelm and humble me. I will post as soon as I know something.

For now, I plan to let Eagle’s Flight sit for next 2 to 3 months as I wait to hear about interest for Black Creek…which leaves me with working on book three! I could have worse problems.

Looking Forward…

I am attending the Spring Fling writer’s conference in Chicago at the end of the month. I am planning on pitching Black Creek with Eagle’s Flight ready if the opportunity arises.

Black Creek is due back this week from a second editor. I’ve finished its synopsis…for the 14th time. Ugh! My first novel is 95,000 words. Writing a 600 word synopsis is like cramming 40 college students into a Volkswagon bug. After making revisions on it, I have 13 publishers to solicit and, then, the waiting begins. But not for long. If the publishers don’t work out, I will indie publish this year. It’s a good problem. 🙂

Eagle’s Flight has, also, been returned from the eagle eye (pun intended) of editor H. Danielle Crabtree. I plan on starting the query process with it this summer once I’ve gotten the ball rolling on Black Creek.

Many scenerios could change any and all of this, but it feels great to have a plan and to be moving forward.

My list of amazing readers continues to grow. You are what keep me going. Thank you!

Top 3 Goals for 2012

Notice I didn’t  say, “Top 3 New Year’s resolutions?” Not even going there, but I do have some things to accomplish this year. What are yours?

I am definitely going to make a decision about publishing on behalf of the patient and supportive readers of my manuscripts. They’re truly awesome and all their kind words really help guide me. I’ve got nine more courses to max out at work and will take a sizable chunk out of that. Finally, I’m going to make more time for my health–both physiological and psychological. Reading for pleasure, working out, taking time to prepare healthy meals and spending time with my family are just to name a few.

I’d love to hear your 3 top goals. Care to share?

Your response has been nothing short of overwhelming. I wish you happy holidays and a fruitful coming year. I’ll keep the FB page updated as to publishing options and decisions. Stay tuned!
